Becoming Clooney: How MSPs Take Advantage Of The MGM Casino And Clorox Cyber-Attacks To Be Their Clients’ Hero

Question: What do Clorox wipes and Danny Ocean have in common?

Answer: Cybercrime.

This isn’t Ocean’s 11 – and you’re not George Clooney. But you know what they say: sometimes truth really is stranger than fiction.

This week, Fox Business reported that “Clorox warned…that the cyberattack it endured last month is causing product availability issues and will have a material impact on its first-quarter earnings.”

Clorox reported that the cyber-attack of August 14 caused “widescale disruption” to manufacturing – causing utter disruption on the assembly line and forcing the company to operate manually as a company statement reported “an elevated level of consumer product availability issues.”

But, other than not being able to have a bathroom vanity drawer full of cleaning wipes on demand, why does the cyber-attack on Clorox matter?

Well, first, the company – a $16.5 billion behemoth – has lost almost 12% of its market value over the past month.

To put that in rough numbers, that’s an almost $2 billion loss. And that’s just the preface.

“The news comes around the same time that major casino giants MGM Resorts International and Caesars Entertainment were hit with cyberattacks,” CNBC reports.

At the time of writing, MGM Resorts is losing an estimated $8.4 million a day as it resolves the cyber-attack. And get this: that’s after the casino initially paid out a $15 million ransom to a cybercrime group that managed to infiltrate and disrupt its systems, according to CBS News.

Maybe this is Ocean’s 11. Maybe you can be Clooney.

Or at least close.

With cybercrime like this in the headlines, how can MSPs respond? How can you as small business owners, and experts in the field, make the most of the moment to better serve your clients, and the marketplace as a whole?

First, you could consider selling extra cyber security services to already-existing clients, offering them levels of protection and compliance standards that will put a hedge around their operations, give them peace of mind and let them tell their customers that they are proactive and protected.

Here at MSP Success, we have an ongoing series on how to understand and sell the growing market of compliance here.

Additionally, you could take a note from Kevin Mitnick and call up local or national news outlets and offer to be cited as an expert source. News outlets are always looking for reliable sources. The best part? You can then use your citations as further “résumé boosters” that will impress current and prospective clients alike.

This is not the first cyber-attack to make headlines. It will not be the last. And as the world continues to evolve, and governments and populations adapt, being on the cutting edge of the cyber security space will continue to pay big dividends – particularly to those who can step in during times of crisis.

So, maybe you can be Clooney for your clients after all, because when the stakes are high, who doesn’t want Danny Ocean on their side?
