What Are You WAITING For?

About a year ago, I thought the concept of shutting down the entire economy and forcing people to shelter in their homes was a crazy notion that would never happen. IMPOSSIBLE. Well, we all know how that turned out…

I should know better than to say anything is “impossible.” Right now, some people think it’s IMPOSSIBLE to do marketing and grow their business, profits and personal wealth amid what many still consider a volatile economy. I hear you “can’t” do marketing “right now.” They are very, very wrong. They are imprisoned by their own belief that it IS “impossible” to grow or somehow “wrong” to do any marketing right now, so they make that a reality. This isn’t my first recession rodeo, folks, and I know from experience there certainly ARE ways to profit, market and grow in any kind of situation or economy – but surrender isn’t one of them. And waiting for things to change, “get better,” open up, etc., isn’t either. Which brings me to my point: stop the WAITING.

A lot of struggling MSPs come to us for marketing advice because they aren’t happy with their growth, profits, client base, MRR, etc., but STILL do nothing because they’re waiting for something to happen, for an “if only” to suddenly appear. If only I could find a good salesperson. If only the economy would open up. If only I could find a good tech to help me out. If only I had more money. If only I could find more time.

WAITING for different circumstances or something to change is a loser’s game. As Jim Rhone often said, “Don’t wish for things to be easier, wish for more skills.” There’s ALWAYS a problem you’re faced with. Always something not right, not perfect, not ready. Always a lack of time and resources. Always a reason to hesitate – but the real winners are those who, when faced with unfavorable circumstances, plow ahead and CREATE the circumstances they desire instead of waiting for them to appear.

Here’s a question for you: Why not do something BIG this year? What’s a BIG goal you’d like to achieve? Do you even have one set, or are you so convinced that “now” is not the time that you don’t even dare to utter it? What ARE you waiting for? Time will march on whether you make progress or not, and we’re already a month into the year, so ticktock. Have you set your course for the year? A destination you want to arrive at? If so, great – now, are you keeping score and tracking where you are? If not, get after that. You don’t want to get to the end of the year to determine you’ve missed critical goals. It’s far too easy to get swallowed into the alligator-infested world that drags you into its quagmire of minutiae and trivia, never getting done those most important things that will drive you forward. Mostly this is caused because people confuse activity with accomplishment and don’t really know what things are MOST important to complete to achieve a critical goal, opting to feel good about crossing off a bunch of “to-dos” and obligations that may be necessary but don’t move your goals ahead.

As a TECH company, you should be having a stellar year. The shutdowns handed you the perfect storm for growth by increasing the need for remote solutions AND snuffing out a lot of the smaller, weaker competitors…but what have you done with it? What were you – are you – still waiting on?
