MSP Marketing Skills Helped Rosebell Murigu Grow A Successful Medical Billing Company

The following is a look at how a former MSP business owner (pictured above at left) took what she learned from this industry and applied those skills to buy a business in the healthcare sector, turning it into the premier medical billing company for providers across El Paso, Texas.

Rosebell Murigu was working in the IT industry but yearned for something different. “My small MSP in San Diego was struggling to scale until I met sales and marketing guru [and TMT founder and CEO] Robin Robins,” recalls Rosebell. “I eventually transitioned to become a consultant and, thanks to Robin, started learning sales and marketing until I realized this is what I wanted to do.”

Upon this realization, Rosebell sold her MSP, moved to Dallas, and found a mentor who taught her about buying companies. She learned M&A and compiled a team to look for a deal. “I purchased a list of all medical billing companies in the U.S. and started calling them. There were over 3,000 cold calls, and Quick Claimers was number 1,472. We hit it off immediately, and I spent the next two years acquiring the company,” says Rosebell. She adds, “Talk about a match made in heaven.”

Building Quick Claimers

Barbara Davis founded Barbara Davis Medical Billing in 1999, which morphed into Quick Claimers Medical Billing (QCMB) in 2003 after experiencing firsthand the challenges and lack of excellence in the medical billing industry. She could do it better! Starting with only one part-time employee, Barbara dedicated herself to building Quick Claimers by bringing on a diverse and inclusive workforce, including single mothers and other talent who were so willing to work but lacked training and opportunity.

When Barbara passed away suddenly in December 2018, it left a hole in the company that her son and sole heir, Andrew Davis, and the now more than 25 employees worked to fill.

“I was attracted to medical billing because it has a technology component, but I also liked that it was in healthcare and could positively affect people’s lives.”

Filling her shoes was a big ask; however, when the team at Quick Claimers received a cold call from Rosebell, everything seemed to fall into place. From the onset, it was clear that Rosebell was the perfect addition to Quick Claimers and could help the company take its next step. Today, Quick Claimers is dominating the El Paso medical billing market one claim at a time through their dedication to care, communication, and excellence.

Continuing A Legacy

Melissa (Mel) Vargas, the company’s current executive director, was Barbara’s first full-time employee and will never forget how Barbara took her under her wing and gave her an opportunity in this industry. “I started in the medical field as a receptionist after high school and met Barbara because I worked for her client. She was starting a new practice, and we hit it off. Although I didn’t know the billing side of things, she gave me a chance because she knew my work ethic and commitment,” explains Mel. “We only had 1.5 providers then, but even then, what stood out was Barbara’s dedication to these clients. I saw the difference she made in people’s lives, not just with her clients but also her employees. She was always looking to help those around her.”

When Barbara passed, there was no way Mel was going to let her dream pass with her.

Like Mel, Liz Romero, the current director of operations, started in the medical field after high school. “The company I was meant to do my externship with hired me on the spot, so I started right away with medical billing,” Liz says. “It was a huge account, meaning we needed assistance from a third-party provider, and I ended up transitioning to that bigger company and met a lot of great people. One of those people worked for Barbara, who needed help with pediatric billing. Barbara contacted me and ended up hiring me on the spot.” Thanks to her previous experience, Liz brought valuable insights to her new team regarding structures and protocols. Liz had been with the company six years when Barbara passed. She also felt that this was not (and could not be) the end of Quick Claimers.

Kym Anderson, the current QCMB Finance Director and past chairman of the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants, says, “I knew Barbara for years before she opened Quick Claimers. I was in public accounting and did her taxes, but more importantly, she was a good friend. She was the type of person who lit up a room and was always willing to lend a hand. So, after she passed, her son asked, ‘We can’t close the business, what do we do?’ I told him, ‘Quick Claimers has some really capable people—let us handle it,’ and so we did. I started working part-time as an outside comptroller through my CPA firm after Barb’s passing until I officially left public accounting in 2021 and became the full-time finance director for Quick Claimers.”

Providing Opportunities For Employees

Ensuring the core values Barbara had instilled in the company continued to live on was important to everyone. One thing Barbara always did was provide her employees with opportunities, and Rosebell followed suit. Upon officially purchasing Quick Claimers in October 2022, Rosebell worked with Liz, Kym, and Mel to make them part owners.

“Here, it’s a flat leadership where nobody is above anybody. We’re all learning and have such respect for each other,” affirms Rosebell. “We also all have different strengths, meaning we really do work together as a dream team.” Plus, they always try to promote from within, cultivating their workplace as a training ground where employees can work safely and progress to management roles if desired.

And this dynamic has allowed these four women to grow the company and achieve success beyond anything Barbara could have imagined. “I was attracted to medical billing because it has a technology component, but I also liked that it was in healthcare and could positively affect people’s lives,” says Rosebell. “I love being able to empower other women, especially financially, because they take it and give back to their children and families, which impacts the entire generation.”

Since reconfiguring the company’s leadership, Rosebell and her team have grown to 35 employees and several contractors. They are looking to perfect their processes to help other medical billing companies grow and thrive. “We already go the extra mile for our providers, so our goal for Quick Claimers is to make it a platform we can build upon, bring other medical billing companies on, and teach them what we do,” says Rosebell. “Currently, none of them have systems—most of them grow through referrals and sheer luck. There’s no active, strategic way of doing it that’s systematized, and that’s where we come in.”

Looking ahead, the women of Quick Claimers are committed to constantly improving and honing their services for their clients, providing their employees with financial and career opportunities while offering other medical billing companies the support they need to succeed. Ultimately, their goal is to continue spreading positivity through their work, ensuring Barbara’s memory lives on within the company and its values and securing their name as the premier medical billing company for providers across El Paso.
