Every MSP claims they are proactive, but for Philipp Baumann and his team at BoomTech, being proactive is the driving force for their ongoing success. While their 2025 revenue growth was stagnant, their business structure was changing for the better. Strategic staffing decisions have since sharpened their ability to aid current and prospective clients, setting them on track to reach their 2026 growth goal of 20%.
Baumann shared his tips for success with MSP Success. From creating proactive positions that focus only on fixing customer issues or optimizing customer businesses, to getting the most out of peer groups, learn how BoomTech’s approach to service is propelling their growth into the future.
MSP Success: What is one key secret to your success last year?
Philipp Baumann: The key secret to our success is our cybersecurity services. We have a very high security standard and stack that we push out to every client. It’s not optional. If you’re a Boom client, you get Boom security.
Alongside our security stack, we do a full cyber preparedness review. This allows us to simulate a cyber event in their environment, giving client stakeholders and leadership a written incident response plan. This means that if a cyber event were to occur, everyone knows what’s going on and how long it will take to solve the problem.
MSP Success: What has been the biggest catalyst for growth for your business?
Philipp Baumann: Being proactive. Every MSP says that, but we actually, really truly are. We have two dedicated proactive roles. One of these roles is similar to a system administrator. He proactively aligns our clients’ business every month against our best practices and standards. If anything is misaligned, he either fixes it right away or flags it for his counterpart.
The second role is our vCIO, who acts like a bridge between technology and business. They understand the technology and what technology can do to drive the business. They help customers maximize their business value with strategy.
This then leads our clients to have fewer issues, which results in smoother operations and more productive people.
MSP Success: What were your biggest challenges this past year related to growth?
Philipp Baumann: People.
Hiring the right people and retaining the right people. First, we have to get them on the bus, the bus being BoomTech, and then we have to put them in the right seat on the bus. We had some situations where we had the right people in the wrong seats. We had to shuffle them around and put them in the right departments and positions to set them up for success. Then we had some folks who’ve been here a couple of years take the opportunity to exit the bus for other ventures.
MSP Success: Has there been a vendor, tool, or peer group that has been instrumental in getting you to where you are today?
Philipp Baumann: We are huge TruMethods and TruPeer believers. That has really changed my world, and I think everybody else’s world who’s working here. We started with them in 2020 and were part of Pod One. We’ve been in it ever since, and it’s been really instrumental in everything we’ve accomplished here over the last five years.
What sets TruMethods and TruPeer apart from all the other [peer groups] is that they have a framework to implement—“If you do this, you’re going to get that.” The other peer groups had KPIs, but they didn’t answer the “how do I do it? How do I actually get there?” I know where I need to go, but they weren’t providing a pathway to get there. With TruMethods, if you follow their guidance and implement their framework, it will get you there.
