Alternative Payments continues to advance its mission of getting MSPs paid faster and easier with the rollout of a new API today. The developer-friendly REST interface aims to give MSPs full control over billing operations.
The new Alternative Payments API “unlocks a tremendous amount of value to customize your workflows,” says Baxter Lanius, founder and CEO of the B2B payments and checkout infrastructure provider. “”MSPs love to build their own workflow automations. “It also allows MSPs to build robust experiences for their end clients.”

Use cases can range from purchasing and paying for service time directly on an MSP’s website, checking out from an online marketplace, or setting up a customer’s payment method as part of the onboarding process, Lanius says.
“I would say probably 50% of our customer base has been asking for API access, which allows them to streamline the operations of their business,” Lanius says.
Features of the Alternative Payments API
The new API enables MSPs to generate hosted payment links, issue and manage invoices, track payments in real time, reconcile payouts, and integrate directly with quoting tools, PSA platforms, and accounting systems. Designed to help automate projects like invoice management and building a complete quote-to-cash flow process, the Alternative Payments API helps speed up payment links to transaction confirmations, according to the company.
Key features of the Alternative Payments API include:
- Self-Service API Key Management: Generate, view, revoke, and rename API keys instantly from the Alternative Payments dashboard.
- Payment Link Creation: Programmatically create hosted payment links for existing invoices through hosted checkout.
- Transaction Status API: Check payment status instantly to update your workflows and customer communications.
- Secure Authentication: OAuth 2.0 token-based access with proper rate limiting and encrypted API keys.
- Customer Management: Create, update, and archive customer records.
- Invoice Handling: Issue invoices with line items, taxes, and discounts, and get PDF links for recordkeeping.
- Transaction History: Search and filter all past transactions by customer, invoice, status, or date to drive reporting and automation.
- Payout Reconciliation: Access detailed payout and transaction data to build your own automated bookkeeping workflows. Query which transactions are included in each bank deposit. Then use this data to programmatically update your accounting platform through your own reconciliation logic.
Reducing the Barrier to Getting Paid
Founded in September 2021, Alternate Payments’ accounts receivable solution enables MSPs to create a white-labeled payments portal, give them flexibility over how (and when) they pay, and collect payments automatically with auto-pay and auto-charge features. The platform integrates with PSAs, accounting, and ERP systems.
The company has grown to 55 employees and supports over 1,000 MSPs, Lanius says. It also raised $22 million in Series A funding in April 2025, with backing from investors like MissionOG and Third Prime.
Lanius says Alternative Payments was founded with the premise of solving an MSP pain point: getting paid faster. He notes that average time for an MSP to get paid is 35 days.
“The billing component is quite complicated and there weren’t many companies trying to automate these financial workflows within the industry in the MSP market,” Lanius says. “Quite a lot of the billing practices are quite antiquated.”
While solutions and MSPs have been focused on automating invoicing, or the upstream process, Lanius says, “people have forgotten about the actual payment component. Our premise really is around how do you bring down the barriers for clients to more efficiently pay you and more seamlessly pay you. We’re automating the entire downstream workflow for [MSPs].”
Expanding from AR to AP
Asked about their roadmap, Lanius says, “We’re building accounts payable, which is a functionality that allows an MSP to more easily and quickly pay their vendors. That will be released in late Q4, early Q1 2026. We know will be the first movers in the market around accounts payable.”
Adding the ability to reconcile license use with vendor billing is “potentially down the road,” he says.
He concludes, ‘We’re very, very excited for the continued growth of the business. We are investing heavily in support and onboarding and implementation and ensuring that we bring the best-in-class financial automation software product with the best-in-class support team.”
